I'd have thought that once you place a tablespace in read only
mode and then back it up, you're done with it i.e. you don't
have to back it up again unless you change the mode to
read/write.  In which case, I'd go with hot backup only on the
tablespaces that are read/write plus exports as Brian suggested.
