/var/opt/oracle only contains configuration files, you still need the client libraries on your client. If you don't want to NFS, then you'll need to install a client installation.
Using the server CD, choose custom install w/o database objects and
pick Net8 TCP/IP and SQLPlus. That should be sufficient for ColdFusion,
but you might need to install some other Oracle components.
