Amazing; it worked. As you may have guessed, I am not an Oracle DBA, just a lowly application developer, but I would like to know WHY inexing the foreign key solves the problem. Is it because the delete statement, without an index, performs an implicit full table scan, thus requiring a share table lock? Is there any Oracle documentation on this?
