Locking Tables

I have a user who is using Powerplay & Impromtu to report on tables while these are being updated by application software. She appears to be experiencing locking problems, i.e. Powerplay is waiting/hanging while the application updates the tables. Does Powerplay access the tables in update mode or is their some other reason why the system should wait.
