Safe Software is pleased to announce the launch of our FMEObjects beta program.
FMEObjects exposes all of the spatial data access and processing
components of the FME translator package to 3rd party developers,
enabling
their applications to access data in any of the 40+ formats supported
by FME. Using a programming language of choice, applications can be
quickly be updated or developed that access data in any format. These
applications can also use the processing capabilities of FME to fulfill
their data manipulation needs.
Read on for a complete overview of FMEObjects.
Joining the Beta Program
If you are interested in participating in this beta program, please send email to fmeobjects_beta_at_safe.com by Oct 29th. Companies will be selected based on suitability. Selected companies will be expected to provide feedback on the progress of their beta testing.
Please include the following in your email request:
Companies that are selected will be sent a confirmation by Nov 5, 1999.
The FMEObjects developer documentation is available online at:
ftp://ftp.safe/com/fmeobjects/devguide.pdf.
We look forward to hearing from you.

What is FMEObjects?
FMEObjects is a new and powerful way for spatially enabled applications to directly read from and write to a wide variety of data formats. FMEObjects technology is embedded directly in your application giving applications access to the over 40 formats supported by Safe Software's FME including DWG/DXF, DGN, SHAPE, E00, Generate, MGE, VML, GIF, ESRI SDE, and Oracle Spatial. With FMEObjects you can add support for as many or as few formats as you want.
With FMEObjects your application also has access to 100+ data processing functions. These processing capabilities make it simple to perform complex operations like building polygons when coming from topology based formats, or calculating topology when reading formats that don't explicitly store it.
FMEObjects is a component version of Safe Software's time-proven FME spatial data manipulation technology.
The FME Universal Viewer is a sample application built using FMEObjects technology. Source code for the viewer will be made freely available to those in the FMEObjects beta program.
FMEObjects technology is exposed via a set of simple interfaces:
o IFMEUniversalReader provides access to all the reading capabilities of FME. Applications can have one or more object of this type in use at a time.
o IFMEUniversalWriter provides access to all the writing capabilities of FME. Applications can have one or more object of this type in use at a time.
o IFMEDialog provides access to the FME dialog box functionality. This
dialog box greatly simplifies the task of developing applications
that
query users for format information.
O IFMEFactoryPipeline provides access to the factory processing
capabilities
of FME. Applications may have multiple factory pipelines in use at a
time.
O IFMEFeature provides access to the underlying feature representation
and
the function capabilities of FME.
Supported Object Component Models
FMEObjects is available in a number of different component models providing access to FME technology to a vast majority of developers. The supported component models and their availability are:
o C, C++, COM, and Arcview Avenue are available now.
o Java, TCL, and MapInfo MapBasic are coming soon.
Highlights of FMEObjects
Easy customization: you can use Visual Basic, Java, Delphi
or any other language that supports one of the interfaces above to customize the capabilities of FMEObjects. In fact these languages can also be used in place of FME mapping files if desired to build custom translators.
Seamless Integration: with FMEObjects you can embed FME technology
directly into your application allowing users to directly read and write different data types.
Component Based: programmable components enable 3rd party developers
to use as little or as much of the FME functionality as desired.
Potential Users of FMEObjects
FMEObjects will be of interest to anyone wanting to add spatial data access functionality to their software application - either for a particular project or for an existing product application.
