I missed that post, as I am new here. Please reply - what does it take
to get the first job as a developer? If you don't have experience but
just like computers and want to learn can you get a job or should you
pass an MCP exam in Visual Basic, for example, first? Would a Lotus CLS
developer exam help you get your first job? Is going the Lotus Notes
Developer route short circuiting your career - better to go VB,C++,
etc.? What language(s) should you know before tackling Oracle? Also,
what are the job prospects for a degree not in computer science, does
one have to go back to school? Do Help Desk jobs lead to developer jobs
or should you try to get a developer position right off?
I'm a career changer who's been interested in computers since before
the PC came out (learned Basic on an Apple IIe) and then became a
Macintosh fan. I've had a career in sales (degree in Psych)using
various database programs but not programming them. I got super
interested when exposed to Win 95 a couple of years ago. Since then
I've worked at a computer training company, know MS Office 97 except
Powerpoint, how to use the internet, and Win 98 and have access to a
lot of cbt but am unsure which direction to pursue. I'm interested in
databases to help salespeople actually do the job, not just keep track
of contacts and in the future prospects of web based applications.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
