7.3.3 client on 8.0.5: ORA-01460 ?

When we use a machine with 7.3.3 clients (I suppose sqlnet 2.3.3) to connect with a server running 8.0.5, we get the error:

ORA-01460 unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested

On other environment where we connect to an 8.0.4 server with exactly the same client, no such message.

This message is also output when we simply start sqlplus, without doing any queries or anything. (There, another error msg is something like Error accessing DBS_APPLICATION_INFO).

This says to me it isn't anything in our client program. I have also tried using the libclntsh.so.1.0 library (client is on a Sun) for 8.0.4, using the same client program. Same result.

Any ideas, bright ones?
