Setting Persisitence of ActiveX control in Forms50

I have added an ocx control for graphing data on my form and set most of the properties using the ocx control's property pages. I can communicate with the control using the bind variable syntax, but I can't figure out how to use to_variant or create_oleobj on an already created item to set its persistence without getting strange OLE errors.
