Solarisx86 is a fine OS also, I have istalled on my PC. I use Linux most of the time just becuase it is easier to get software ready for it, and have more internet support.
I use sybase on Linux and very happy with it. I am planing to also install oracle 8i to play with it and try it out. I have also install mySQL and postgresSQL databases on Linux to play with. I used JDBC to access sybase on Linux (with jConnect driver) and it works just fine. I find the performance better than on NT for same setup (but I have no hard numbers to support this, it 'feels' faster, I have no skill nore time to make real performance tests).
linux kernel 2.0.36 have only 2GB limit per one file on ext2 file system. I am not sure if this limit was removed in Linux kernel 2.2. I ordered latest debian distro to install and find out.
Linux is just Unix, but it is most popular Unix OS for the PC, and I am very happy with it, and moving all my data to it.
notice that now, one can run Linux binaries for intel on Solarisx86 also. there is software called lyrun (I hope I got the name correct) that allows one to run Linux binaries as is on Solarisx86. Have not tried it.
