I have had experiences similar to Jerry's such as:

    Access -> ODBC -> SQL*Net (Firewall/T1) via Internet (Cable Modem)
SQL*Net -> Oracle8
    and
    IE 4 (Firewall/T1) via Internet
    (T1) IIS 4  -> Business Objects (CORBA) -> SQL*Net -> Oracle8

both could/would give good performance unless the Internet was slow. In this
scenario only the speed of the network was a factor, not ODBC or even CORBA!
