I am having similar problem trying to use ODBC driver have tried:

- blank
- 2:   (for loopback)
- 2:ORCL   (default SID)
- t:ORCL    (tcp/ip)

but not having any success and cannot find anything in Oracle 8 documentation about the connect string.
