Hello Anthony,
My answers are inline.

Oracle is the best.
Because Oracle's market share is 60% of the Unix RDBMS market and 46% of the
NT RDBMS market. Since you are talking about a consultancy go with the market
leader since you will be able to pursue more assignments and will encounter
less resistance to your proposals.
>(2) Given a budget of £4000 describe a system that you would like to have
on
>your desk, and why?
A Pentium 200Mhz, 256KB of RAM, 30GB of SCSI disk storage, a 17" monitor
(unless you
have a very deep desk in which case go larger). This configuration is based
on the fact that when running an RDBMS the limiting factor in performance
tends to be disk performance
-- not CPU performance.
Your system should be a tri-boot system with Windows 98, Windows NT, and
Linux. Obtain Oracle for NT and/or Oracle for Linux. (Subscribe to the
Oracle Technology Network
-- it costs $200 US per year)
Take the money you didn't spend and have a party.
>(3) What developments do you see as that likely to be most significant over
>the next year from the point of view of a IT consultancy specialising in PC
>usage?
The beginning of the end of the desktop PC's dominance of the computing
scene. I
believe that increasing complexity of managing an organization's PCs will
result in
alternatives such as the Citrix server, thin clients, and "appliance"
computers gaining
rapid acceptance.
The effect of this trend on a consultancy specialising in PC usage is that
the consultant
should focus on network based applications and departmental level servers.
It would
also be beneficial to acquire Unix/Linux skills since a high percentage of
the departmental
servers will be Unix boxes.
