Oracle Client Installation failure

Our network administration has reported big problems attempting to install Oracle 7.3 Clients on certain NT4 workstations. The installation program is starting fine, but causes Dr. Watson to show up even before the first screen of the installation appears. Today he announced that he had found a common factor between the luckless workstations: at some point in the past the name of the workstation was changed. He says that changing the name back doesn't allow it to work either.

It sounds to me like he's really clutching at straws here. Has anyone else encoutered a problem such as this? Can the workstation name really have any impact on the installation?
