Oracle certification

I`m fairly new to the Oracle game (about 3 months of junior DBA role) and am looking into certification.
What are the general sort of time scales for achieving certification (I know much of this depends on the person in question of course). Is it a case of having understood the 'required' trainee courses with Oracle or is a large degree of product experience needed as well.

Any experience on this from currently certified users is greatly appreciated.
