Hi,

Yes, it is a hard job to learn Oracle and learn it well. That is one of the reasons why Oracle developers and data base administrators are so well paid in comparison to COBOL programmers. Given your opportunities I would elect to make the bigger investment of time and effort required to learn Oracle.
