Hi Andrew,
Since you are posting from erols.com I presume you are located in the Northeastern United States. If I were you I would start contacting the Human Resources departments in the larger organizations in your area. Also contact every firm in the yellow pages that claims to provide contract programming and computer consulting services. What you are looking for is an entry level Developer's job.
When you get one it won't pay too well, but the important thing is get a year or two of paid experience so that you can either get a very handsome increase or move on to greener pastures.
In my opinion you should hold out for a developer's job and not try to go the Help Desk route.
