Oracle8 (Linux) -> Oracle 7 (HP-UX): ORA-12545

I have the following setup

Oracle 8.0.5 client installation on linux which is supposed to access an Oracle 7.3.3 Database server running on HP-UX 10.20.

I think I got it all set up correctly. The listener is running on the HP-UX machine and seems to get the connect because the connect can be seen in the listener log with the correct SID. Despite of that i get the message

ERROR:
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist  =

after entering the password

I triplechecked username, password and SID.

connecting via the thin jdbc works, while the oci8 jdbc version does not (java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01005: null password given; logon denied) using the came connect args.

Any ideas anyone?
