Yep, I had this problem too. Orainst tries to install a file into a directory
that doesn't exist, and it doesn't know enough to create it. Obviously a bug
in orainst. I just opened another xterm and created the directory it was
looking for, then hit Retry in orainst. No problem from there on.
There is probably nothing wrong with your Linux installation. (I used Red Hat 5.1 also)
