PRO*C under AIX

I want to compile a very simple Pro*C program under AIX. All it is trying to do is to connect, display a message and disconnect. Being not from a UNIX background, I am having difficulties understanding the provided makefile. If I want to compile and link manually, what are basic steps? I just want to know the library(s) I need to link my program with.
