Server and Net8 vs ODBC?

We're using NT as the server platform. Win98 (not 95) as the clients. A

few Q's:

1. Personal Oracle 8.0.3 and Designer2000 8.0.4 are not compatible on the same machine. All sorts of problems occur, mainly neither will even start up with the other installed. How can I correct this? No downloads/updates available on Oracle's web site...
2. Since we can't get P.O. to run locally, we are trying to get the 98 machine to "connect" to the NT server (Oracle Enterprise). We are totally confused. Should we use Net8? I just want to get to the NT machine and have full control over that dbms on it.
3. Net8's Java programs fail on all of our win98 machines <-- can you comment on this? Net8 comments on startup that it may not run with 98, I

need an upgrade. However there are no upgrades available on your web site! Perhaps provide a route for upgrade? We're using 8.0.4 of Net8.

Suggestion - FORGET THE DAMN CUTE JAVA CODE ON NET8. It causes many many

more problems than it solves. Just write the thing in C++ or something and be done with it. Java does not run correctly on any platform, and it

varies between platforms at that. As an end user, I'm not impressed with

Java and it's system hangs, program bombs, erratic behavior and in the case of Net8, the way it renders an entire application worthless. I shouldn't have to go out and build a 95 machine, put on SP1, ensure my JVM is precisely version so and so, all my DLL's, ocx's etc are version the other just to get the damn thing to work. All of our 127 workstations are Win98. As a developer, I wouldn't push Java on my worst

enemy. Regardless of the press hype, Java is a joke. Please pass this on to your development staff.

4) Should or *can* we just use ODBC for all our client-server needs? Development, design, run-time etc? I've downloaded 8.0.5. Remember, Server on NT, Client on 98 because Personal Oracle and Designer/2000 won't work together on the same machine.

5) When we start Design/2000, it immediately gripes about no connection and fails. What connection? ODBC? Net8? HELP!
