I don't really see what you mean by "..no comms.." ? DBD::Oracle is definetly connecting to the DB and working. I've written and run several test scripts succesfully. The ORA-03113 occurs when you try to "bind a null and get a string back". Perhaps it's our version of Oracle that can't handle this particular test (Oracle7.1.3 .... I think)
Out of interest, ORA-03113's also happen due to dodgy repeater segments, as we found a couple of weeks ago!
