Access97 ODBC connect string: disappearing password

Our endusers query an Oracle database using Access97 via the Oracle ODBC driver (2.05.0301). A very strange thing has started to happen yesterday.

When one makes an external link to an ODBC data source from within Access, one has the option to save the password. The same applies when making a "pass-through" query. In both situations, I do specify that the password should be saved, and for the past four years, starting with Access 2.0, then Access95, and now Access97, this has always worked. Up until yesterday. The password is not being stored in mSysObj with the rest of the ODBC connect string. Why? The Access database is not readonly. No security has been turned on. The connections work. But only for the duration of the session, since the password is missing. I created a new MDB thinking the first one was corrupted, but the problem happens with the new MDB as well.

Anyone ever encounter this problem before?

TIA
