I just did a search of TechNet and found the article Windows NT Server 4.0 & Related Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), Last Updated: December 1997. It says in part:

Is Microsoft phasing out development for Windows NT Server on MIPS and Power PC platforms?

Yes. In response to decreasing demand for MIPS and PowerPC (PPC) systems from customers and OEM's, Microsoft plan's to phase out the company's Windows NT development efforts on MIPS and PPC platforms. This has been driven by similar decisions made recently by key industry partners including NEC, IBM and Motorola, regarding their plans to halt the breath of their MIPS and PPC efforts. Microsoft will continue to offer technical support to its customers who use Windows NT 4.0 on MIPS and PPC platforms and will provide any platform specific hotfix's as part of our standard QFE process.
