Home -> Community -> Usenet -> c.d.o.misc -> auto-starting of Oracle Names Server on reboot
Hi guys:
I am having a hard time in starting the Oracle Names Server as a part of the reboot process. We are running Oracle 7.3 on Digital Unix 4.0B and Oracle 7.2 on Digital Unix 3.0B. Both machines are giving the same problem.
What I want to do is start the Names Server process (namesctl start) after the databases have started as a part of boot process. Every thing looks fine and there are no errors recorded anywhere. The log file says that the Names Server process started normally, but when I look at the oracle process using 'ps', I do not see the Names Server process. I can see all other processes. Now after the reboot, if I just give the command 'namesctl start' the Names Server starts and everything looks good. I have made it sure many times that the script used to start the Oracle Names Server process is correct. Infact, I monitored the processes while the machine was booting up (in the last stage, as Names Server is the last process to start), and I do see the process if I use the ps command. But when the machine comes up finally, the process is no more there. I have spent pretty good time in exploring this with no success. Also tried, starting the process with 'nohup' as the parameter, but same problem.
I do not understand if it is a Unix problem or Oracle problem. As a test, I tried running a dummy process after the Names Server process but same results. Also I tried starting the Names Server from the same script which is used to start the databases - same results. Looks to me some kind of Oracle Names problem, but ORACLE was not of much help.
I was wondering if anyone has gone thru this before.
any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
