well the types have been thrown around but this is what I use: SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE, then a STARTUP RESTRICT then a SHUTDOWN NORMAL, then do the backup.
It has not failed me after 4 years of doing it. What you dont want to do it a shutdown abort and then do a backup, for the database is "not" in a consistent state, now we will watch the arguments begin about consistent state.
