The differences are mostly in being able to support more types of indexes
and larger data sets, so you wouldn't be too bad off as long as you realize
some things won't work. There is definitely something to be said to have
books that go along with what you actually have. I have an "Introduction
to SQL" written by one Lawrence Ellison in 1985 that wouldn't be out of
place for a beginner now.
