Pesonally I don't consider NT as a bad choice to run Oracle . I've worked with both environment and saw that NT is very a promising environment . But I still have my preference running the database on Unix and the application running on Windows.

Few reason why I prefer to run the database on Unix are .

  1. Control of the Machine resources. Tweak around with the kernel param and see the improvements . (Of course this also is the same with NT only with lesser parameters to play with :-) )
  2. Unix is back end oriented (same as the DB server) , Windows is front end oriented which makes it a perfect environment for frontend applications.
  3. Unix's advance scripting capability make administration job simplier ( awk , ksh , csh , sh etc ) ( One example is you can create just ONE file that both contains a mix of SQL statements , awk , sh commands to backup the, database , maintain and monitor disk space , send mailing lists reports , inform the administrator if there were some problems, delete old no longer needed files etc...... With NT scripting you should atleast separate the SQL statements with the batch and have the batch call it . Or if you need to be more sophisticated Use a 3 GL tool.)
  4. Memory management

     etc .

Some popular reasons why some peaple prefer to run the Db   on NT.

  1. Unix Utilities are more expensive .
  2. Unix is complex and NT is easier to use .
  3. Configuration on NT is simplier than in Unix machines.
  4. Popularity of NT .
  5. Theres a lot of frontend developers who are more familiar with NT than Unix.

During my last DBA project there was just one perfect reason why we used NT besides the overwhelming support for technical staff for a UNIX platform .....

The BOSS said so ..... :-)
