Oracle does have a JDBC Type 4 driver out now. Been trying it out, but still at babysteps.
Nice not to have to do a middle tier (other than the http server for applets, of course.) Very limited
cursor functionality in java products yet--no scrolling or reversible cursor in the basic JDBC
spec. However, a slew of vendors is working on java products, and I expect to see a dizzying
variety of products ranging from visual development environments to class libraries to apps.

The big hangup is JDK (java developent kit) support in the big 2 browsers. I'm betting that MS will be forced into conformity once Netscape ships JDK 1.1 support this September. If that happens, look for java (or more precisely, java-based products) to overtake ADO.
