I used Access to talk to Oracle on Netware using ODBC. Access has its own dialect of SQL just like Oracle. It is the job of the ODBC driver to handle the necessary translation.
ODBC test is not very reliable - mine used to crash when using SQL*NET 2.3 for example.
I also used to have problems with joins in Access - I used to get an error message. Oracle helpdesk were aware of limitations with the odbc driver I was using and recommended downloading (free) the latest v2 ODBC drivers. This solved the problem.
