I think he meant "without having to create an uncompressed file as an intermediate stage". Useful if you are short of disk space.
The standard trick is to mknod a named pipe, open one session and start gunzipping to the pipe, open another session and import from the pipe. I think it's in one of the Oracle FAQs.
