Oracle Applications - Security API

We are using the various Oracle Applications (HR, PAYROLL, etc.), and wish to extend the capabilities. For these extensions, we wish to present the users with a username/password dialog, whose responses would be validated against the appropriate FND tables in the database (for example, FND_USER).

However, rather than check against those tables directly, we feel that Oracle should already have an API for performing the various checks. We would like to use such an API, rather than writing our own.

Does anybody know the name of the (presumed to exist) API that Oracle Applications uses to validate name/password combinations?

Any guidance would be appreciated.
