You better talk to your sys/admin. SCOTT/TIGER is the sample username/password combination used in most examples in reference books; it is generally not a valid combination for operational databases -- although one might be surprised. The connect string is usually in the form of NAME.WORLD, and specifies which database you wish to connect to (as there might be more than one!). Speak to someone in your organization who knows. And get ORACLE:The Complete Reference from Oracle Press; this book was invaluable for me when I began with Oracle.
