Er, you mean *forwards* compatible, for a 7.0 binary to run on a 7.1 system. Oracle *is* generally backwards compatible.

I would say you will almost certainly have to both recompile and relink your Pro*C programs moving from 7.1 to 8. We had to do this moving from 7.1 to 7.3 Oracle on AIX, the 7.1 binaries would not run, as they were looking for older, 7.1 version libraires. Since recompile and relink they have run just fine.
