DBA - What tasks are normally handled ?

Since we are contemplating adding a B to our departmentname, which is currently DA, I would very much like to know more about what a DBA does and doesn't do.

I'm particularly interested in knowing about how the different kinds of tasks and what kind of training/knowledge they require.

We are thinking about having some DBA tasks performed in our department - DA, and other more 'technical' tasks will be exported to our operations department, since they currently perform tasks such as backup and recory etc.

ANY input will be appreciated !!!
