I could be wrong, but most of the init.ora parameters seem to be in v$parameter so I believe that the control file names can be found there. I am at home so I can not check before replying. (I hate when I can not remember something I know, but just can not remember when I need to recall it. Five minutes from now, ug!)

Is there anyway you could make use of the 'alter database backup control file to some_filename' command to meet your need? In this case all you need to know is the destination. Still the other way has advantages.
