There are a number of good boxes out there many will perform with your initial requirements. Depending, of course, on what type of users, how often they query/update ... Also if you a planning on expanding particularly to over 2 Terabytes then I would strongly recommend a 64 bit OS DEC or SGI. As far as RAID goes RAID 5 will be you cheapest for disk but will give poor small block write performance. RAID 0+1 will give good small block write performance but will require twice the disk. If you can partition you DB into current Read Write tables and historical Read only tables you can combine the RAIDs effectively. With 400 GB of disk RAID will be necessary.
