Newbie - Database going down alot

I have an instance using Oracle 7.1 Workgroup server running on Windows NT
3.51.  The database seems to be going down about once a day.  Apparently
you can perform select statements but not updates? 



I am thinking REDO logs?  Need help in where to look to pin point and fix
