Do you have access to another server that you could keep an archive copy of
the database on?
That's what we did. We copied the database to another server, which is up and
running all the time.
We gave people read-only access to the data, to prevent accidents. We then
purged each archived
financial year (1993,1994 and 1995 in this case) from the live system,
including AP. This freed up lots of space on the live system, while allowing
instant access to the historical data. If you don't have
access to a 'spare' server, I'm not sure how you would go about doing this.
