We use a script to shutdown immediate (in sqlplus) all the DB's then shutdown/bounce the box. On Windows, Oracle will perform crash recovery on startup, but that was not acceptable since some DB's might be very busy during shutdown and just didn't want to take the chance of a failed recovery in production.
