The ODA documentation implies that thin cloning functionality is available =
on the ODA.
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E22693_01/doc.12/e55580/dbadmin.htm#BAJIJABFCrea=
ting Snapshot DatabasesAn Oracle snapshot database is created by taking a s=
napshot of the ACFS file system where the source datafiles reside. The sour=
ce database can be single instance=2C Oracle RAC=2C or Oracle RAC One Node.=
Compared to other methods of creating copies of databases=2C snapshot data=
bases require less time and storage space and involve no downtime of the so=
urce database. Additionally=2C you can create any database type and class f=
rom any other type and class. For example=2C you can create an Oracle RAC d=
atabase from an Oracle RAC One Node database. Similarly=2C you can create a=
database that is different in size than the source database. On Oracle Data=
base Appliance=2C you can create snapshot databases from any Oracle Databas=
e stored on Oracle ASM Cluster File Systems (ACFS). Beginning with Oracle D=
atabase Appliance Release 12.1.2.0.0=2C this includes any Oracle Database R=
elease 11.2.0.4 or later database created or upgraded on the system. Additi=
onal requirements for a database to be used as the source for a snapshot da=
tabase include:must not be a standby or container database
must not be running in read-only mode=2C or in restricted mode=2C or in onl=
ine backup mode
must be in ARCHIVELOG mode
must have all defined datafiles available and onlineAlso=2C ensure that the=
system clocks on the two Oracle Database Appliance nodes are synchronized =
before creating a snapshot database. To create a snapshot database=2C use t=
heoakcli create snapshotdb command=2C as shown in the following example=2C =
which creates a snapshot database named snapprod from the database named pr=
od.oakcli create snapshotdb -db snapprod -from prodBefore issuing the comma=
nd=2C ensure that the system clocks on the two Oracle Database Appliance no=
des are synchronized. If the clocks are sufficiently different=2C the comma=
nd may fail.

Thanks Pete.

=0A=
I've now seen the ODA. The database is version 11.2.0.4. The data=0A=
files are stored in ASM disk groups=2C not on ACFS mounts. I am not=0A=
sure if it is still possible to create snapshots with oakcli in this=0A=
situation?
=0A=
=20
=0A=
Is the snap clone functionality in EM/Cloud Control licensed with=0A=
any optional pack? It sounds promising.. there is not much disk=0A=
space left on the array=2C so a thin clone is preferable =3B-)=20

I=0A=
don=92t think I saw anything about database versions in the=0A=
thread=2C so there are a couple of other options you could use=
=0A=
depending on the version:=0A=
=0A=
=B7 If=0A=
the DB is 12c=2C there is snapshotting capability built into=0A=
the database itself=0A=
=B7 From=0A=
DB 10g onwards you could look at using Enterprise Manager=92s=
=0A=
Snap Clone functionality which uses copy on write technology=0A=
to build thin clones=2C optionally including masking as well. =
=0A=
This may make it easier for you to do the snapshotting as=0A=
its built into the product=2C which makes it less error prone=
=0A=
than a manual snapshotting process.=0A=

understand that oakcli will create & manage fs=0A=

supposed to be production=2C whereas the other node will run=0A=

needs to use oakcli to create databases and that this=0A=

Oakcli is nothing=0A=

=0A=
Use RMAN or=0A=
Enterprise Manager for this. There will be little=0A=
difference from a standard RAC database in how you=0A=
backup and restore a database.=0A=
=0A=
=0A=

=0A=
=0A=
Don't=0A=

=0A=
=0A=
This isn't specific=0A=
to the ODA. There are a number of reasons to have=0A=
local wallets in RAC -- one of the most important=0A=
being that you can't have a local only autologin=0A=

will find little argument that the documentation for=0A=
ODA is mediocre at best. This is why a number of=0A=
training companies (including the one I teach for)=0A=
have developed their own content for the ODA. I think=0A=

The ODAs apparently are each set up as two=0A=

understand that one needs to use oakcli to create=0A=
databases and that this tool hides pretty much all=0A=
functionality that we are used to through dbca etc.=0A=
But what does it do exactly? How does one manage the=0A=

=0A=
just on one? Is this automatic? Given a complete=0A=
backup (... which is a problem all of its own...)=2C=0A=
how does one restore a database? Don't use=0A=
centralised wallets with TDE=2C otherwise problems=0A=
will arise -- but what does that even mean?=0A=

I've now seen the ODA. The database is version 11.2.0.4. The data=0A=

Is the snap clone functionality in EM/Cloud Control licensed with=0A=
=0A=
The ODAs apparently are each set up as two=0A=
stand-alone servers with shared storage. I=0A=
understand that one needs to use oakcli to create=0A=
databases and that this tool hides pretty much all=0A=
functionality that we are used to through dbca etc.=0A=
But what does it do exactly? How does one manage the=0A=
OCFS? Can a file system be mounted on both nodes=2C or=
=0A=
just on one? Is this automatic? Given a complete=0A=
backup (... which is a problem all of its own...)=2C=0A=
how does one restore a database? Don't use=0A=
centralised wallets with TDE=2C otherwise problems=0A=
will arise -- but what does that even mean?=0A=
Questions...
=0A=
=0A=
Pointers to more complete documentation/blogs/etc.=0A=
