The database will try to drop objects first, then extend. This causes problems with triggers - see note 742698.1 and bug 16725282.

While the documents refer to login triggers, I got confirmation from Oracle that this can actually be caused by any trigger.

OK, let me admit : It is been my suspicion that Oracle may choose to auto-extend a datafile rather than purge the recyclebin. Guess this needs to be tested.
