Look at this issue from a different perspective: most likely the data was a extract from the primary source, stored in a spreadsheet or a small Excel db, and either stored or backed up onto a external USB drive. This is exactly the reason the security folks are always cracking down, and why laptop hard drive encryption is becoming more popular.

Hi,
Nobody in their right mind would store personal info (SSNs, credit card nos, etc) in a test or dev environment, never mind chuck it on a disk in plaintext to takeaway. It's trivial to XXXX it out for test use.
Surprised you asked on a list that almost certainly knows better.
