Slow JDBC with Oracle 11 on 64-bit linux

Have just installed Oracle 11 R2 on 64-bit RHEL and am experiencing slow JDBC connections.  

Having googled the issue it seems this may be an issue with Oracle 11 on 64-bit platforms  

Has anyone else seen this or have any more information?
