I recall that certain Unix systems (HP-UX?) required a periodic bounce because some of the Oracle memory structures/counters were not large enough to handle the numbers that would be generated over time. I have not had to deal with this issue in quite a while, so it may have been a 32 bit issue as well. I did a search on metalink and came up with nothing.
