Re: hanging shutdowns

If your requirement is to shutdown quickly, here is one solution    

1. Find out the process id for the current session from v$process.spid. and run "shutdown immediate" 2.. From a separate session kill all the oracle${ORACLE_SID} processes except the process id found in step 1. This may have to be run from root, to kill bequeath processes.

Thanks for the input and if I was calling the shots, I wouldn't do it this way. However, I would still need a script that would shut the database down quickly, possibly for maintenance or hardware issues, so I really appreciate the suggestions provided on this thread.
