- Easier to tie down problems, vendors of one app can't blame vendors
of another app in the same instance for problems.

Which ever you go for it's generally a good idea to go for multiple apps using the same physical database box rather than separate boxes. Usually for the price of two low powered and unreliable boxes you can get one box that's more than twice as powerful and more than twice as reliable. Sadly, getting project manager's to believe this is much harder than it should be.
