LDAP - SunONE vs. OID

The site I'm working currently uses SunONE (previously called iPlanet) for their LDAP services. Oracle Net name resolution is currently configured through tnsnames. This is getting more and more unmanageable, given the fact that 170 instances on appr. 60 servers are in use right now, not counting the numerous amount of clients. Of course, Java-apps are using the thin client, to make things even more unmanageable.

I'm new to LDAP. Does anyone have experience in using SunONE for Oracle Net configuration? From the doc's I understand one should use OID, and replicate to/with SunONE. Is it possible to skip OID, and configure the OID-stuff directly in a SunONE LDAP tree?

TIA, Carel-Jan
