Working at a place that is a leader in data-intensive science, our batch farm is now either 3,000 machines or CPU's, I forget which, and the database is now 895 TB, I hear about the grid frequently SLAC belongs to the PPDG group, the Particle Physics Data Grid along with other high-energy physics labs, Caltech, the San Diego Supercomputing Center, UCSD, and the University of Wisconsin. As I understand it, the real question about the grid is whether its ready for prime time; i.e. is it reliable enough.

Sure. You will start seeing some of these, however, adoption of "grid" is very very small, and expensive. It's the hidden costs that everyone forgets.
