walking into your cube and seeing this big pile of books and asking "what's all this?" to be told "oh you're the new DBA, and the database is down so fix it."  

having a third party product that's been working for a year suddenly stop working and being told by the vendor that having the database on a database server and the application on an application server is "not a supported configuration."
