Onames is deprecated because it works reliably and without much ado. With
LDAP, 
On the other hand, life gets interesting. Oracle LDAP is truly portable
among 
All other OID instances. Forget about WebSphere, WebLogic or iPlanet, it

with OID only. I'll be darned if I install the whole huge monster like OID
just to
be able to locate instances. I'll rather use NFS mapped tnsnames.ora
instead.

Yes, ONAMES is deprecated.  Yes, LDAP is the replacement in the form of
Oracle Internet Directory ("OiD").
